Young male drivers on a provisional licence don't have to pay through the nose for car insurance - we can help find policies at far more affordable rates.
Whilst car insurance premiums have jumped since 2008, with young male drivers bearing the brunt of this, we see customers being offered pretty cheap car insurance premiums at under £870* for male 17 year olds wanting to learn to drive. Be careful though as we also see 17 and 18 year olds being quoted far from affordable insurance with premiums of £6,000 or more.
Where can I find young male learner drivers at a reasonable premium?
If you are happy to restrict the drivers on the car to one learner and a maximum of one parent a good starting place is our car insurance comparision service. Collingwood, who specialise in provisional driver only policies, are on our panel and make this restriction on drivers but if you can work within it premiums can be amongst the lowest - from 'only' £867 p.a.*
There are downsides as a Collingwood policy means that once you pass your test you will need to cancel it and start with a new insurer - Collingwood will supply evidence of no claims for your new insurer though (they don't offer no claims bonuses themselves, presumably as most of their customers have qualified by the time renewal comes around!). One parent on the policy can be insured free of charge (subject to insurers acceptance), but not two - so if you add more additional drivers to your quotation you will not find their quotation displayed.
The other search we would really recommend at present is with iKube (either visit their website or call them on 0844 346 0402). Those currently getting a quote from the company are more than twice as likely to accept it than industry norms, suggesting the company have identified ways to offer attractive and affordable premiums to under 21s. Male learner drivers receive a discounted provisional car insurance package in return for a promise to avoid driving between the hours of 11pm - 5am (or at least paying a significant extra fee if they do). These times are important because they are when statistically young drivers (and in particular young male drivers) are at a higher risk of having an serious road accident.
iKube premiums are not the only reason they are popular as they also offer some really worthwhile benefits including the promise not to increase premiums once the driver has passed their test. THIS A IS A MASSIVE REASON TO CHOOSE THE COMPANY AS PREMIUMS TEND TO LEAP ONCE A DRIVER IS QUALIFIED as premiums from some companies can as much as double at this point.
iKube offer both fully comprehensive learner driver insurance or third party fire and theft cover and include free cover for named drivers (subject to underwriting approval), discounts for safer driving and free breakdown insurance.
Other ways of affording car insurance for young male drivers
Although it sounds odd there is a great scheme out there allowing young drivers to buy a new or nearly new car, and subsidise (or even pay for the insurance completely) using the discounts you can get from a car dealer.
Its called the Young Marmalade car purchase and insurance plan. Basically it uses the 'discount' that you can get when buying a new or nearly new car to provide a cashback payment to fund your insurance, and possibly the deposit required to buy a car which can be funded on HP, through a bullet repayment scheme or bought outright. As the discounts can be as much as £3888 it can ease the insurance 'pill' considerably. There are however a few considerations to bear in mind so if you are thinking about the Young Marmalade scheme we suggest you give us a call here at moneymaxim on 0800 520 0699, and we will happily provide you with some impartial thoughts and provide an indicative quotation for you.
Who offers the best no claims discounts for male learner drivers after a year
Premiums for learner drivers are lower than those once qualified. Its therefore not a bad idea to try to use it to build a no claims bonus before the higher premiums kick in the following year.
The Co-operative Insurance company offer a massive 50% no claims discount after just one claim free year. They too use a tracker fitted in the car to identify whether the driver is a higher or lower risk than the average, so the aims with this policy are to remain claim free and have an excellent driving record. The Co-operative Insurance look at factors such as acceleration and braking, cornering and the speed of the vehicle as well as the time of day the vehicle is being driven to access future premiums. The Co-operative say that young drivers save £556 on average using their policy (based on online independent research by Consumer Intelligence during August 2011).
It is worth remembering though that with both the Cooperative and iKube schemes above its the car rather than the driver thats being tracked, so can be unsuitable if its a car shared around the family.
Standard Car Insurance for Young Male Learner Drivers
The Moneymaxim Car Insurance Panel
Our Car Insurance Panel includes 30 companies who specialise in young drivers including young male provisional licence holders and learner drivers. Insurance companies who focus on inexperienced drivers include Admiral, Bell, Diamond, Elephant, Quinn Direct and Endsleigh (who specialise in young professionals and students).
With many of these companies it can be beneficial to have a couple of additional experienced drivers on the policy. So for example adding two parents so they too can use your vehicle (maybe to pick up after a party or take it for its MOT?) maight deliver benefits.
Most companies will increase premiums when the learner passes their test so why not run quotations as if the driver has already passed to see what the future might hold - remember though that this provides no guarantee as to what rates may be in the future but should give you a steer.
Young Male Learner Driver wanting to use another drivers car?
Whilst you can extend an existing policyholders own insurance policy to cover a learner driver (providing the insurance company allows this (many companies who focus on mature drivers are not happy to do so) and the car is a lower insurance group) this does potentially put an existing no claims bonus in danger. As these are now of considerable value given the recent rise in base premiums many experienced drivers prefer not to take the risk on.
An alternative method is to use Provisional Marmalade who provide cover for provisional drivers driving someone elses car at from under £3 per day - which can be really competitive - learner drivers cover can be purchased by the month and if there are any unused months when the new driver passes their test a refund will be given. To qualify the car used must have an insurance rating of ABI Group 32 or less and be valued at less than £20,000. This maximum grouping covers the vast majority of cars likely to be favoured by a learner driver to practise in.
Instalment Plans for Male Learner Divers policies
Watch interest charges when paying monthly for your insurance! Interest rates vary hugely and some insurers can charge an rates of over 30%. If having found a policy you discover its one which charges a ridiculous interest rate think about applying for an interest free credit card - either to pay for the policy outright or to do a balance transfer if you have already paid for it on another card. See the moneymaxim guide to interest free credit cards for more details. The card applicant will need to be over 18 with a reasonable credit rating.
